Equipment Review and Discussion :: UVB lights - are they only effective for a limited time?

I just installed Exo Terra 26W 5.0 uvb lights for my newly adopted turts. The box has something about replacing in 1 year, and I thought I read something about 6 months. So, even if they appear to be working, they do in fact need replacement?

Some bulbs have a spot on the base where you can write the month and year that you start using it so you can remember when to replace them. I replace mine once a year unless they burn out first. Some people choose to replace them every 6 months. The rate of uvb output will diminish over time so even if the bulb still gives off light after a year, it should still be replaced

Yep! I replace mine every six months. Unless you buy a very expexsive meter you cannot tell how weak it becomes. After a year your turtle may be getting very little uvb rays.

Depends on the bulb aswell.

Most flourecent bulbs, long tubes and compacts, only last 6-9 months.
If you want to pay a little more next time the MVB bulbs are known to last up a year if not a little longer untill the UVB wears out. But the cost is nearly double.
MVB has been recognised as the best UVB source out of anything on the market, besides the sun of course..

I agree---it does depend on the bulb and UVB strength. The only way to tell if a bulb is emitting enough UVB is with a UVB meter. To be on the safe side, many people replace their bulbs, especially the flourescents, after 6-8 months.
