http://www.bigalsonline.com/BigAlsUS/ct ... e=Category

I'm about to purchase a XP3 for my 75 gallon tank and I want to purchase some filter media along with it for the extra mileage......just to see there are about 5 or so different types of media I can get for it.

Which ones do I need? All?
How often do these need changing?
What do I use to clean the tubes?

I apologize for the boatload of questions, but i'm sorta new to this maintenance side of keeping turts. Thanks though!

I was wondering about all that myself! I want to get an XP3 for the new 50 gallon I just got but had no idea about the media.

Really all you need to get is a bunch of carbon and the ceramic rings. You might want to get 2 packs of ceramic rings, as the biological filter does a lot of work in a turtle tank. It comes with the foam already, and some carbon i believe. The rings last pretty much forever (don't wash them with tap water or let them dry out!) and the foam lasts a long time, you just need to rinse it when you clean the filter. You have a few options for the carbon. The easiest one is to just buy the carbon packets they sell for it. This is also the most expensive way to go. Your other option is to buy a big canister of loose carbon and either a reuseable filter bag or some filter floss. I just pack a thin layer of floss on the bottom of the basket, fill it with carbon, and put a little more on top. I rinse it out under the faucet and it's ready to go. It's easy and clean and a lot cheaper than buying the specially made carbon. Carbon needs to be changed every couple of months. To clean the tubes you need to get a special tube cleaning brush, its a long bendy wire with a little poof of bristles at the end. They don't need cleaning very often though, i've had my XP3 for maybe 6 months now and my tubes are still looking clean. Happy shopping!

sai_dee - Whatever filter you get make sure that you get a mimimum of 350 gph. There are several that will do that. You will want to turn you water about 5 times per hour. I use the sponge and carbon on one and sponge carbon and ceramic rings for the others. Good Luck!

I have always used the bio chem zorb. Haven't used any of the other zorbs. The bio filter seems to take care of any other chemical needs.

What carbon do you use and what's filter floss?
Here is what I dug up from BigAls for carbon and bag.

For the most part, I've used the carbon packs made by Rena. I did try buying a big container of carbon and filling my own media bags with it, but it was messy and when I calculated how much I was saving, the amount was insignificant. The Rena carbon was much more convenient. :)

Yes, it comes with media. It's usually missing "bio-media" like ceramic rings so be sure to pick up one or two packages of that stuff.
