Crayfish?

I read on the Nutrition page that you should never feed turtles crayfish, can someone tell me why? My tutrles eat them. why are they a high risk food? i got them as a treat is this okay as a treat very very rarely? or should i never feed it to them?

They have a high fat content it looks like. Sure feeding them very rarely is okay but you should probably not feed them it. If you actually spent money on them you can put that towards better live prey. As for me they are free so I still feed them to my turtles rarely.

Very rarely should be fine, but it should be very rarely, if that.

We bought some in a effort to help clean the bottom of the tank. We were warned that they would become food but we thought that since they were so fast the turtles wouldn't be able to catch them. We were sure wrong. With in a few days they were gone. Lesson learned.....don't buy crawfish to be tank mates with turtles.

There has been some evidence that they carry a certain bacteria (forget the name). Larger ones could nip a turtle with their pincers.
