I have two young RES, they are in the same tank.
When feeding time comes around, I try to limit them to 2 turtle pellets per turtle.
The problem is, I have one agressive eater, and one shy one. The agressive eater usually steals all the food. I have been trying to watch them when I feed them more, and make sure that my shy male get to some food as well, but in this process, my more agressive turtle gets more than 2 pellets.
I have tried seperating them when I feed them, but neither of them will eat outside of their tank.
Any ideas?

its because your only putting 4 pellets in there there stomache is about the size of there head ..and 2 pellets even in a hatchling would want more

i have three hatchlings and i usally just put some in and in 5 min or so if its all gone put more its usally a trial and error thing depends on the turtle/(size)and if some of the food isnt eaten you can fish it out with a net
and it dosent really mater how many each get as long as there both getting it

Wont they over-eat if I do this?

no they should be fine just put like 6in there and see what happens you might have to seperate them if the one isnt getting anough food

IN ALL just to see what happens then if you have to seperate them during feeding time and give um LIKE 4 A PEACE and see if they eat that and if they eat all those rather quickly give um another one but if ones getting most of the food the other one isnt getting enough


another reason the one eats so fast is because hes really hungry all the time

i have same problem i tried this i think i just have to seperate cuz one turtle is alredy pyramding so i think thell be seperated now

Dont put 6 in the tank. 2 Max every other day or so. Turtles are like goldfish as I was told, they will eat them self to death. They LOVE to eat. just limit there food and throw some feeder fish in there or something. I usually throw about 35 feeder fish in my 50gal and they take a while to catch them all, its been about a week now and ive still got a good 12 or so feeder fish out of 35. but what ever you do dont over feed them. 2 pellets max usually a day.

Thank you everyone for your advice with this question. I am having the same problem. What I am going to do is remove the dominate eater for a few minutes, so the other will have a chance to eat first.

i had the same problem.
i have a bigger male than the female as well as 5 other fish in the tank.

to avoid fish stealing the food and the bigger turtle over eating, i hand feed them.

i break off the pellet so they can eat it easily and i hold the edge of it with my nails and i *slowly move towards them. they'll usually run away but if you maintain your hand and drop it down in the water just a bit or even just hold it above the water they'll usually swim to you and snatch it away.

you can have fun trying that or you can separate them. i prefer to handfeed them because i want my young ones to get warmed up to me.

I personally don't like hand feeding because then they start to associate your fingers with food.

If they won't eat in another tank, why don't you use a board or something to separate them IN the tank while feeding? Something like a cutting board would probably be large enough to separate the tank in half temporarily while they're being fed.
