i bought the Exo Terra Sepia Bones - yes i realized it's just re-packaged cuttlebone but i thought it would be without that hardbacking since it's made for reptiles.

but i think it does have that hardbacking -

can anyone in this forum confirm this?

i found the backing a pain to remove so i figured i'd try the Sepia Bones.

I don't know about that specific brand but when I bought "Turtle Bones" it still had the backing, so I wouldn't assume just because it's for reptiles that it doesn't have a hard back.

There's a post on there about how to easily remove the backing. Easiest way to tell is to scrape each side with your fingernail to see if it's got the backing.

The Turtle Bones had the backing too? i think that brand is either Zoo Med or Zilla -

yeah i'm pretty sure it has backing probably to prevent it from cracking while shipping and storing.

Yup, actually, the sticky above that shows how to remove the backing is for ZooMed Turtle bones!

Cuttlebone is a 100% natural product. There is no applied backing. It is just how it is.


PS Sepia and Cuttlefish are the same thing.

Try scratching your nail on both sides. If you can't make a mark on one side, that side has a backing on it.

The backing natural, it's just a harder side of the bone. I think it's the side of the bone that is closer to the skin of the animal.

Yep. Just marketing. It would be great if there was a machine to remove it easily, and they actually sold it without the hard back on it. Then, it should be called turtle bone.

i'm not that sensitive. I actually eat cuttlefish and knew of the bone but didn't know that one side was soft and the other hard - and people spoke about a "backing" - i assumed that the backing was artificially placed there like a backer board for a comic book.. learn something new every day - that's the beauty of life.
