Feeding and Nutrition :: Feeding question

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

I'm new to this....

How exactly do you feed your turtles? I know they don't produce saliva so do you just put the food in the water or do you put it in their basking area and let them take it in the water to swallow?

Any info is greatly appreciated.

You can do either...I just put it directly in the water for routine feedings and I put their treats on the basking dock

your choice

Yeah, it doesnt make any deference; I put the pellets and the shrimps in the water cos they float, and i hand feed them with meat, fish and insects. I put the veggies in the water too, but now i put them to the basking dock.
So definitly it s up to you

It's easier for them to grab it from the water. My RES are too aggressive, so they want their food ASAP.

Some people (including me) feed their turtles by hand. I just hold a pellet close to the surface of the water, then they come up, and CHOMP! I like hand feeding because it makes it easy to monitor how much food your turtles are getting and provides more interaction between you and the turtles. ^_^

Thanks for the info, I have tried both ways. Mine are still too young and still not used to their habitat enough to hand feed. I can't wait though. For now I will continue to both so they don't get accustomed to either way.

Since they're aquatic, it would be more natural for them to get their food from the water.

In our pond, sometimes the food lands on the island and they'll crawl up and get it... but usually, they prefer it in the water.

When we have time, we hand-feed them (note my avatar)
