Which pellet is best?

I have compiled the information from six popular pellets guaranteed analysis', and I need some help reading it. Is protein good or not? Stuff like that.

Please vote for the pellet you think is best overall, then share your opinion, and I'll try to come up with some ratios for mixing pellets according to your answers. (With veggies of course!) It's summer vacation, and this is what I'm doing for fun. Speedy is teaching me so much!

Mazuri is considered a high-quality, top-notch brand. I personally feed a combo of HBH turtle bites and Reptomin, but I'm going to look into adding Mazuri to the mix.

Mazuri is top of the line, I believe the quality of ingredients is better, and the fact that they have such a good reputation really adds to it.

That's interesting...
Notice that Mazuri is the only one that uses poultry by-product meal (not a good thing). What makes it so good?

The HBH bites sound tasty to me

I use ZooMed and I am wondering if I should be wondering why I don't see anyone else using it?

I feed a mixture of Wardley's and Reptomin. Wardley's is:

Crude Protein: 40%
Crude Fat 6%
Crude Fiber 5%
Moisture 10%
Calcium 2% - 2.5%
Phosphorus 1%

Fish meal, ground corn, soybean meal, chicken by-product meal, corn gluten meal, fish oil, brewers dried yeast, salt, calcium carbonate, dicalcium phosphate, choline chloride... then a bunch of other stuff

I've always wondered what mix of all these %'s we were looking for.

AllisonChains - I use ZooMed too!

untsmurf: Yea, I don't know what to look for when I read the packages. I'll add Wardley's to the chart and poll.

Without knowing what percentages are good or not, I'm still happy with my ZooMed. Reading the Fluker's ingredient list makes me cringe with all the protein mentioned, but it has less than Reptomin which is so highly reccommended. Which still begs the question...is protein/fat/fibre/etc good or not?

Yes it's good, in moderated amounts, but exceeding, or not getting enough of each can be bad.

So does anyone know what the proper proportions are?? Like if you could design it, what would be the perfect percentages?

I was surpised to see corn meal as the first ingredient in Mazuri...That would be concided a mark of a very POOR food in dog food. I know dogs and turtles are very different, but is that much corn good for a turtle?

In this link direct from mazuri's website, it has a much more complete ingredient list, as well as a very detailed % breakdown.
https://www.mazuri.com/PDF/5M87-5E08.pdf

It's a pdf, so it may take a while to load on a slow connection..

I emailed Reptomin and HBH to try to get a pretty breakdown of the vitamins and minerals like Mazuri has. Reptomin got snotty and said it's on the bottle (which it isn't, just the basic breakdown); HBH said they didn't think they were allowed to release that info, but he'll see what he can do. So ...

And I really love the ingredients list on HBH turtle bites, which is why I brought up in the other Mazuri thread why exactly it's considered high quality. I'm skeptical, but I don't have any Mazuri around here yet.

Reptomin and Mazuri have very good reputations and Spot loves them both - just gobbles them down. He turns up his nose at several other brands.

At the moment we are using Zoomed food for our turtle but thats cause it was the best we could afford and the best quality turtle food at the pet shop near us as we couldn't reach a bigger one. I may have to try and convince my love to order some from Mazuri when we are finished with the jar of Zoomed.
