A paring knife, very carefully as well. I lose a lot of little chunks, but I keep my skin!

I've got a pointy butter knife. It's safer than a sharp knife, and I'm accident prone ^^;

What happens if you leave the backing on it?

When the backing breaks, it has sharp points and edges. It isn't digestable, so the concern is that it will get inside the turtle and do damage.

That is good too know! I'll be removing the backing as soon as I get home this evening.

Thanks,

i guess that cutting cuttlebone backing is more of a patient art, because i seemed to fail my first attempt hahaha.

Well I took the cuttlebone out last night and tried taking off the backing. After soaking in the tank for about 3 days it was very soft. When I would try and hold it tightly it started disintegrating and all I got off was little pieces.
