Feeding and Nutrition :: Am I feeding my turtle correctly?

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

Post Posted: Wed Jan 09, 2008 4:58 am   Am I feeding my turtle correctly?

It's two and a half months old and it's has about a two inch shell.

I usually give him two reptomin pellets in the morning or one pellet and one baby shrimp. I then give him chopped up lettuce, usually an hour or two before I turn his lights out.

I'm basically worried if I'm feeding him too much or too little...any ideas?

How big is his head? You should be feeding as many reptomin pellets as would fit in his hollowed out head.
The daily veggies are great, try to add some variety if you can.
I wouldn't feed the shrimp daily. It's not that nutritious and is high in protein and can lead to shell issues. I'd make it more of a treat once or twice a month.

his head isn't very big at all. he could probably fit four pellets into his hollow head to be honest with you, i'm just wary of that being too much.

i don't really feed him the baby shrimp anymore, it's used more as a snack/treat every now and then.

If you can fit four pellets in his head, then you can safely feed him four pellets a day. As he grows and his head gets bigger, you can increase the amount until he gets to be about 4" long, then you cut back his pellets to a headfull every other day.

He can have all the green leafy things he wants! Have you read up on turtle nuitrition on the main part of this site? There's everything there you ever wanted to know about feeding your turtle, including how much. Here's the link:

I give my turtles 4 pellets every other day. The are probably the same size as your turtle. They are about 6 months old now.
