How do I know what NOT to feed?

I've read everything on this forum about nutrition and was surprised with what res can eat. I was also surprised to read what they shouldn't eat. I often have other veggies such as green beans, broccoli, water cress, asperagus, cilantro, parsley to name a few but don't give it to them in fear of making them sick. They currently get pellets and a variety of field greens as well as anacharis. My question is how do I know what not to feed such as spinach. Is there a specific vitamin or mineral I should stay away from? I don't mind researching the food if I know what to look for. Also can they eat grass? Just asking.

Have you read the sticky notes on what to and what not to feed?

Oxalic acid is something to stay away from because it can block the absorption of calcium, so veggies high in that like spinach are not good to feed.

Anything with vitamin A is great to feed-- carrots etc.
Most water plants are great as well.
If you have any specific questions ask-- it's better to be safe than sorry.

And as for grass-- be careful of giving turtles anything from yards-- they could be coated with pesticides or other chemicals. I don't think grass is harmful, but I don't think it adds much nutrition either.

Thanks for your help. Yes I read all the sticky notes. I know it's impossible to be all inclusive so this is why I am interested in knowing what to stay away from. I'm trying to broaden their diet while they are young so they won't become picky. I really appreciate your help as well as all the other people on this forum.

Phosphorus will also block the absorption of calcium and is something else to limit. I wouldn't give them anything that burns (hot peppers), onions, garlic or anything with thorns or spines. I wouldn't give them nuts.
