That's so cute!!! Ralph *was* going after lettuce like that, but now he's eased up a lot... I think I scoop out more than he eats ;P

I have to say that I have some man-made pebbles in my RES's tank--they're tan and light green and look iridescent in certain light. I got them in a craft store, and they are aquarium safe. I don't have a lot in the tank, so they don't bang against each other. I think two have broken since they were put in (about 3 years ago---my RES's head is now about as big as they are, but I really doubt he's ever going to try to swallow them). If you're going to load them into your tank to any depth where they'll be piled on each other and/or if you're rough with them when cleaning, I don't think it's a good idea.

Of course with the size of your turtle the marbles aren't edible, but they chip and will have to be taken out later, they're expensive too.
