i have a tank that i am going to convert to a RES tank, it already has Java Moss growing on wood and java fern growing in the gravel.
aquarium forums always say that fish won't eat java fern, but about half of the fish species i've ever had (which is a lot), have always at least nibbled at it or just torn it apart in an attempt to eat it.
i'll let you know how it works out with the new little RESs that i'm acquiring. but i presume that they won't eat it after they learn that it tastes bad, because they're a little smarter than fish.
Also, the plants should grow well with the light in the tank. I use a little bit of liquid fertilizer for aquariums.
Personally, my tank will have a standard 30 gallon aquarium light strip, plus a 100W light bulb on one side for the basking.
you can plant java moss in large gravel, but it does better on wood or between rocks.
Java fern will grow on anything, anywhere. give the tank a natural look, but it can grow in clumps too and will even grow in your filter.
