Post Posted: Tue Aug 04, 2009 10:03 pm   dont wanna overfeed

First off I am sorry if this question was asked already as I dont have the ambition to read all the posts to find this :-)

Im feeding petco premium turtle food:

A. Is this food suitable for a RES?
B. How many pelets per day?

the label is vauge and I dont want a fat turtle

Also I been told to give the occasional live fish but am not clear how many to put in or if this is the right thing to do

Also my RES is always eating poop, she beats me to the pooper scoop so what am I doing wrong?

thanks in advance

I'm not familiar with Petco premium turtle food, but pellets in general, you want to feed a head-full amount daily if your turtle is under 4" or a head-full amount every other day or a half-head-full amount daily if your turtle is over 4".

A head-full amount consists of the amount of pellets that you would imagine could fit in just the skull section of the turtle head, not the neck. Their belly is about their skull size!

To give you an idea, for my 6" turtle, I'm feeding about 16 pellets every other day. At 4" I gave about 12 pellets, and at 2" she was getting about 5 pellets daily.

Live fish is okay, but you want to go for lean fish, like rosie red minnows. Stay away from fatty fish, like goldfish. You want to give only a few (like 2-3, depending on your turtle's size) once per month, as a high protein treat. If you give too many and your turtle eats them all, they may throw them back up ...
