Feeding and Nutrition :: Crickets

Can I just buy me some crickets from a bait shop. They look just like the ones you would buy from a pet store, but they are cheaper. All I need is one of those cricket pillows, some gut loading feed, and some crickets. I already have one of thos big hermit crab keepers.

It seems that anything marketed for pets is instanly price gouged lol. I myself would buy them from a bait shop. I bet anything they come from the same supplier lol.

When I raised crickets I had them in the kritter keeper. I gave them a water dish which I put put wet paper towels in(they can drown in a drop of water). You can also use 1/2 an orange everytime I did I had fruit flies and crickets... So no need too buy the water pillows. I feed them infant rice cearal(pablem) and fish food that I put in a coffee grinder.

The only main benefit to buying them from the pet store is that you can buy the gut-loaded ones which have extra vitamins and minerals stuffed into them. I personally can't stand crickets, so I bought the freeze-dried gut-loaded oens from the pet store and my turtle loves them and they have a shelf life of like 3 years and come with like 50 of them stuffed into the bottle. Just IMO.

The reason why I think Bait Shop is because, I don't care about getting gut-loaded ones, I'm going to buy a jar that has water, food, and calcium in one.
If they are a lot more cheaper at a bait shop I'm going to get them there, but if it's only a few cents, I'll get them at Petsmart. The reson why I'm not buying the bottle is because I don't know if he will eat ones that won't move, already dead. So I gigured that I'd get about 10.

i had no idea they could eat crickets..cuz my dragon has to eat live ones ..do they have to be dead to feet them crickets??i would think so..

ive never fed crickets but i think they can be live ones or dead ones.

turtle_love - One of Tenodera's picture posts (http://www.redearslider.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=15046) had some awesome shots of his turtle pondering eating a cricket. The cricket was alive and hanging out on the basking dock.

You can feed them live or dead, depends on what you keep on hand. For someone with just a turtle, I don't need a box full of crickets. If I had other reptiles, though, I'd probably feed live if I had them around. I can say that the freeze-dried ones are gross enough, and I hear they make them in cans with some juice with them, which is even grosser sounding!

There is a cricket in my house... SOMEWHERE... I can hear him but I can't find him and it's really starting to make me angry! He's somewhere in the area of my turtle tank. And when I do find him, I would LOVE to just drop him in there and let Toby gobble him up, though I know I shouldn't. So tempting though...

Tomorrow I'm going to see how much it is to buy about 5-10 crickets....but since I don't have enough money to buy the food,$7.00, I'l probably either get a floating plant so Slash has a place to rest, or an Anarchis plant so maybe he'll get some veggies.

Crickets are usually .10 cents a piece, very cheap. Sometimes I buy them as a treat for my geckos...They love them.

Never given one to squirt though.

Yeah, here the small ones are .09 cents and big ones are .10 cents. My mom bought my turtle a plant for me since I didn't have enough money, butI've got to pay her back, so it may be a while until I get some crickets.

I fed My female 2 live crickets (from the pet store because of my beardy)She loved it and i gave them to her in the tank she went straight for it ..it was awesome watching the cricket drowned while shes trying to swallow it whole!!
