Feeding and Nutrition :: Feed in or out of tank

Hello all you helpful people. Thank you very much for all the important help on RES. I'm so glad I found this site.
Do all of you leave your turts in the tank to feed? Or do you take them out and put them in a smaller tank to feed? I do and am wondering if this is stressing out my 3inch RES.

I don't find it makes any difference as far as keeping the tank clean, which is the logic behind it for some people. It shouldn't stress him out, as long as the water in his feeding container is from the tank (same temp, etc). I found feeding mine out of the tank was way more time consuming and more trouble than it was worth, but it's really up to you and your turt. Some don't feel comfortable out of their tanks and will refuse to eat. No harm in trying.

Thanks so much. I just upgraded to a 25 gal from a 10 gal. I'll try feeding in the same tank. I agree it would be so much easier. Was always told that RES are very messy with poops and all. But I've got a filter. I'll just clean that more.

What size is your turtle? 25 gallons is a bit small ... I personally feed my turtle in the tank because he didn't want to eat the one time I fed him out of the tank and he snatches up the food right away anyhow. It hasn't seemed to stress my filter, either.

My RES is about 3 inch. Actually the turt is my son's. I have been turtle sitting while he is in college. He will be moving into an apartment in June and will take the RES with him. So we had to get a bigger tank eventually.

I have two RES and they can be a bit messy, so I feed them in a seperate tank but the first few times they were confused because they were used to them been fed in their home but as time went by they knew that when i put them in the smaller tank it was time to eat!
