If you want to swim with your turtle, go for it. I'm not stopping you, and no one else is. You asked us if it would be ok, and we gave you our input on it. It's your choice, good luck.

OK, you say people pee in pools all the time---one of the reasons the water is chlorinated. (I haven't been in the kind of pools you're talking about in a long time.)

It's your turtle, you can do what you want. You seem to have your mind made up about swimming with him. You wanted to know if it was a good idea---members have told you what they think.

And if there are people peeing in the pool that you are taking your turt in... he might drink someone else pee. I would be more concerned about his eyes getting irritated... Im sure there is SOMETHING in that pool to keep it clean, which normally isnt in your turtles tank. Ive always wanted to get a custom made swimming pool for karlyn when I won the lottery, HAHA, but I would never treat it with chemicals.... Let us know how your turt does afterwards!

If you're going to do it anyways, why bother asking?
The fact is to your turtle you are a huge predator, and having to "swim with you" translates to fearing for his life, the turtle doesn't know that you aren't out to harm him. Turtles are not dogs. If you want a pet to swim with, buy a dog. If you end up stressing out your turtle too much it will die.

We had an opportunity to sort of swim with our turtle Lou, but the situation was different. We were setting up and filling the 1200 gal pondfor the first time, and fixing all the folds and seams in the liner, and put her in at the same time. We were lucky though, Lou is (was)8 years old, she is 9 now, and very social with humans. She was curious of us in the new pond, we sat in it and she swam around us and such. We also have to get in with her and the other one knee deep to clean the pond and she loves to help, no biting from either. However I wouldnt suggest taking the turtles out of their usual habitat to go to a pool due to stress and chemicals. Its not a matter of getting in with turtle pee and such, because the lakes of the world are not clean either and we swim in those, its the turtle safety.
Anytime you see a turtle up on top of a fence post, you know he had some help.

Great post, MamaLou! That must have been so nice to get in the water with your turtle, especially since she seems so fond of you. :D I can just picture her following you around while you clean the pond. That must be really cute! I agree with you that taking the turtle (especially if it's young) and moving it to a totally strange place with people splashing around and making a lot of noise would be extremely stressful.

I have a saltwater reef tank with corals and fish. I've always dreamed of building a huge tank or pool and building a coral reef in it and then go snorkeling in my own backyard. That would be so cool!

Why do you come and ask a question when you have no intention to listening to the replies. You clearly are going to take the turtle into the pool regardless of what is told to you by everyone here so why frustrate us all by asking 'is this ok?' and when everyone says what a horrible idea they think it is, you say 'well I think I'm going to go ahead and do it anyway!'.

Seriously...

(*edit* Oops... didn't realize there was a 2nd page to this and people have already said what I wanted to say hehe Glad I'm not the only one who raised an eyebrow to this thread)

hey that's great jefferson01! It was nice of you, too, to check back and let people know what you finally did so people wouldn't wonder.

I'm glad to hear that too! :D It's clear that you must care about your turtle a lot, otherwise you wouldn't have bothered to come here to talk about turtle stuff, right? Hey, we all get crazy ideas sometime that seem cool at the moment, but after we think about it some (or someone else knocks some sense into us) we forget about it and move on. :)

well, yes, that's very true jefferson, but when you're standing besides his tank or holding him you're not in HIS space. Being in the water is his space, his safety.

Also, I agree with what savingsaturday that he would freak out about not knowing where he's at. I just put my turtles in a 135gal tank for the first time and they totally freaked out and didn't know where they were at. A swimming pool would be exponentially bigger to them and stressful, even without you in it.

I know what you're saying though, it would be totally awesome to be able to go swimming with mine, but it just wouldn't be good for them.
