You can get better prices on-line than in the stores. Here are some good on-line sources:
petsmart.com
bigalsonline.com
reptilesupply.com
drsfostersmith.com

Places like petsmart and petco sell the Whisper Power Filters, in my opinion they are very affordable and do a good job cleaning a rather small tank (10 to 30 gallons, for anything bigger I would get a stronger filter, or I would use two) They cost around 30$ each.
I use one and another similar filter for my 60 gallon setup, I use the models made for 60 gallons, so I have enough filteration to filter out a 120 gallon tank!
They do have some downfalls though, when they loser power (plug the cord out) they spill out all the gunk, poop, skin etc from inside the filter. And some claim that they burn out rather fast. So far I havent had a problem with them.
