I am going to be commissioning an above tank basking platform, and I am wondering how much space, if any, I need to leave at the top of the tank where I will be covering it? There will be open water going up to the basking area, but do I need to leave an inch or more of breathing room in the whole tank?

I leave about 3 inches. Our turtle likes to sleep standing on top of her cave and leaning against the glass so her head is close to the top so she can stick it out when she wants a breath. She's a lazy turtle. :)

I keep my light further away from the top of the tank. My turtles won't come up to the rock if the light is to close to them, probably because it's to hot.
