Habitat - Indoor :: pokey tank ornaments

We're thinking about doing a Greek-themed tank for Hercules, and I'm looking at little pillars and temple tank decorations at Petco.

http://www.petco.com/Assets/product_ima ... 79981C.jpg This one in particular, I really like, but the edges are kinda rough. Do you think it's risky to put something like that in with a turtle? I'm just afraid of him getting scraped or scratching along his shell or something. Could something like this be sanded down? Or should I just stick with an appropriate background and some plants?

I think it's fine. I like it! The only concern I'd have is a turtle getting stuck in there but Hercules is a BIG boy, if I recall, so don't think that would be much of a risk.

Hercules is a great name for a big turtle because turtles are SO strong! I was holding Spot today and he was pushing with his legs real hard. His muscles were like iron! I just marveled at him and thought about your turtle named Hercules.

I have an underwater platform (the old basking area) and I just make sure they can't hit it when they launch off the main platform.

I have to agree with the strong legs... hehe

Don't try and sand anything made of resin! That's what most aquarium decorations are made of. I had a fresh water tank with some assorted fish awhile back and I tried to sand/file down a piece of artificial driftwood that was made of resin. The resins seal came off, obviously, and it started to chip and flake and one of my knife fish ate it and died!

I really like the decoration! And anyway it's probably not as sharp as you think. People use stuff like that in aquariums all the time, sometimes with fish that are really fragile, like those goldfish with the eye bubbles (I can't remember what they're called!)

That is COOl! I think as long as the tank is large enough that it would be fine!
