Habitat - Indoor :: *Not Basking*

Leo hasn't been basking, as far as I know, for about 2 weeks now!! I lowered his water temp to between 76-78 (it had been 80- he's still a baby) and filled the water up a bit higher so the basking light would be closer to the dock in hopes of enticing (sp) him to the warmth! I've had that same basking light since I first got him, is there a possibility it may be getting weaker and becoming less warm for him? Other then not basking as much, he seems perfectly fine. He eats well (pellets and romaine), defecates regularly, and is very active!

Are you sure that he isn't basking when you aren't around? My turts never bask when I am watching. I've had to sneak up on them to catch them.

Sheba starts basking early in the AM when I leave for work, so by the time I get home at night, she is done & in the water already. I am gone from my house for at least 10 hours every day (work, skating).

I'm not sure- i'm usually able to catch him when I go into my room throughout the day- I'll hear a little plop and he's back in the water but atleast I knew he was up there to begin with! what problems can occur if a turtle isn't basking enough or at all?

They could develop shell problems but that's long term. Don't worry, if he's eating and active he's probably OK. Just some minor adjustments to the water and/or basking area is in order. When resting in the water, does he spread his back legs and feet out? That could mean that the water is warm enough that he can't be bothered with climbing up to bask so he just basks right in the water. My guys do it all the time. Or the ramp might be too cool, or too hot for him. You just have to experiment a little.

Also bulbs lose their intensity (heat) as they age. You should check and adjust weekly.....
