Habitat - Indoor :: I can't stand this weather!!! (Cooling Question)

I'm not sure if anyone is dealing with this as well but the weather around here keeps going from freezing to really hot back to freezing back to really hot and when the freezing comes along its fine because the tank has the heater to heat the water if things get a little cold in the room- but now with the sun shining in and it burning hot outside the tank water keeps fluctuating and I really don't want Leo to get sick! I've read temporary fixes for a tank getting too warm- but this is like every other day!!! I'm very frustrated!! I even moved his tank to the other side of the room so the window wouldn't be as close to him but the room is so hot still- I don't know what to do!?


Also since this is in the topic of indoor habitat- the box for my basking bulb said it produced UVA rays as well- so is that technically a UVA/UVB combo? I think I may have asked this before but I still only have that one bulb and lamp and want to make sure that's okay! He loves to bask and is acting normal!

Where do you live? The weather is fairly warm here compared to a week ago, but the temp still isn't fluctuating like yours is.

UVB lights also give off UVA rays. They aren't the same as combo mercury vapor bulbs that give off UVB, UVA and heat. You still need a heat source with a regular flourescent UVB light.

Memphis, TN- literally just 2 days ago we were down to like 40 to 50 degrees outside and today it got into the high 70's low 80's. I closed the blinds but the sun coming through the window was still heating up the room a lot!

I know EXACTLY how you feel! It was in the lower 30's here last week through monday, and yesterday it was 75. Today it was 70. The house has stayed between 72-80, but I turned on the air for an hour yesterday. That may be a first ever in Iowa in November! Usually I wouldn't worry, but I don't want the tank emp for the turtles to fluctuate too much!

If it is that warm in the room, let your RES out of the tank for a while so he can dry off & go exploring until it gets cooler in the evening. Just put up some safeguards so he doesn't wander into places he shouldn't.

I may have to do that if it happens again but of course- today it's cold out and the room isn't heating up! I swear if this weather doesn't stop i'm moving... haha

We have about an inch of snow and 30 degrees today. I have the heat on now.

Wow! That's like it snowing in June here! Weird! Of course you're probably at a higher altitude than I am here, but still, yuck!

If you let him wander outside of the tank & are concerned about how cold it is, you can always buy one of those heater rocks for an iguana/lizard/gecko/snake. It is a flat warming rock that you plug into the wall. It is not submersible so you can't use it in the tank, but a turtle can sit on it when he/she is walking around a room. It helps to cover this rock, maybe put a box over top of it with a "door" so that the turtle doesn't feel exposed when sitting on it. Turt can just wander in and stay warm.

I have been quite excited by Sheba's travels around the floor. Sadly, my turtles are right at 2 inches now, and I am waiting until they hit about 4 to loose them upon the house. I love the slipper behind the toilet idea for the free range turtle. That is so cute! I plan on making a few hidey holes for them in case they are scared dring thier travels. I am looking very forward to next summer too when I can free the wee beasties in the yard!

I can't wait til next summer either because Leo will be big enough to first of all- find out if he's even a Leo! AND I can get a kiddie pool and take him outside and let him bask in the real sun!! I'll feel more comfortable doing that once he's not a hatchling anymore! Do you think at 2 inches I can sweep up the bathroom floor and let him wander in there for awhile?
