A 9 inch turtle will need at least a 90 gallon aquarium/stock tank. You will need a good filter (canister), a basking area where he can haul completely out of the water to dry all parts of his shell, a water heater, a heat light (regular household bulb) and a UVB light that emits 7-10% UVB rays and don't forget that RES love to swim, so as much water as you can fill it up without the turtle escaping. Also plants (real or fake) are a good addition to the set-up but not gravel or rocks smaller than the turtles head. He may eat these and become impacted. Usually either river rock or nothing at all is used for the substrate.
