hi fellow hobbyist,

i'll keep this short and simple. I have a leaky canister filter (beyond repair), is it alright for me to use it like an underwater filter?

I doubt it. Canisters depend on a gravity siphon for most of their flow. I doubt you would get enough water flow to avoid anaerobic bacteria.

That's just a guess.

Good points by ljapa. It's very dangerous using something electrical not as designed/engineered. What part is leaking? Nearly all canisters can be fixed or has a replacement part.

thanks for your replies. the bottom part of the tub of the canister filter was once dropped and chipped out a small crack/hole. i found it in the garage, the gaskets are also all dried and cracked. i looked into replacement parts and total purchase would pretty much be purchasing a new one. i was hoping to use the still working powerhead motor and use this as an underwater filter. where the water level would be higher than the canister, and such water would just gush in naturally, or where the output would create a suction of water to feed the ongoing process. i too was worried about the electrical part being submerged in water.

What model filter is it? Though it sounds like you're better off getting a new canister. What's the tank size?
