This is what my local home depot has in white. Otherwise, the play sand is only brown, and I can't find white anywhere else. I bought the play sand already, but haven't opened it to wash yet.

I use pool filter sand, although mine wasn't white.

Many seem to think the more regular grain size in pool filter sand is an advantage, and it's supposed to have less dust than play sand, which means less time cleaning.

I did a search and can see that some people prefer pool filter sand. I didn't know if there was a difference between the brands. Pavestone seems to be the only one they carry, although maybe they have another brand in store. I'll look tomorrow. The downside to sand, at least initially for me, is that I don't have a working hose. I'm going to have to wash it across the street at my neighbors house and then carry it over, and put it in the tank.

There's only two types of sand. Aragonite sand (calcium carbonate) and Silica sand. Any Silica based sand is OK for the turtle tank as long as it's 100% sand and the granules aren't large enough to become impacted when/if swallowed. Play sand and pool filter sand are almost always silica based sand.

You can pour some vinegar into a cup and then add a little sand. If it bubbles and fizzes like alkiseltzer then you've got calcium based sand (sell this to your friends in the saltwater / reef hobby). If it does nothing and just gets wet then you have silica based sand - perfect for freshwater turtle tanks.

Home Depot and Lowes both carry something called "kiln dried handy sand". You'll find it with the cement mixes and quicrete sand bags. It's white and requires little to no rinsing.

Safety announcement: DO NOT USE any polymeric paver sand. I know this is obvious, but someone once PM'd me and asked me about this stuff.

I have white petco sand in mine. I wanted Mystic white II pool filter sand but couldn't find it im my area.

When I get a larger tank im going to use Mystic white II. Its a really white 100% sand.
