Habitat - Indoor :: Am I doing it correctly?

Hi! So my turtle died and my family is trying to restart, but we want to get some feedback on what we got before we go out and get another one.

It is a 10 gallon tank (He was a hatchling) with a 20 gallon Whisper 20i filter.
The bottom is filled with gravel that is all too big for him to eat. We plan to remove it for the next turtle.
The plants are artificial. We removed the cuttlebone after he died.
The dock is a floating turtle dock, the light on the right is a basking light that I believe is 5 watts. The other light on the left is a low powered light just for giving out light. Both are waterfroof.
The water is around 80 degrees along with the basking area.
Am I doing anything wrong?

Through better inspection, I found out the water is actually 68 degrees. There's the explanation. So, a water heater is a must. The basking area temperature is only around 80 degrees. Gonna need to get a better light for that, too.

For a hatchling this is alright.

Personally if you can swing it get a bigger tank (at least a 20 gallon long) and filter. I started out with the Whisper too and had to change the water every couple of weeks and it would clog and overflow, went to a Rena XP3 and it has lasted 6 years and 3 tanks (20 gallon long, 40 gallon breeder, and now 55 gallon). If you care in the States Petco has thier $1 a gallon sale on now until the 18th.

UVB should also be over the basking area. I'd look into a screen cover (1/2" spacing) for the tank too.

Petco has a dollar a gallon sale. Get a 40 gallon breeder tank. Your turtle Died while it was a baby?

I have a 40 gal breeder. The foot print of this tank is large for its size giving your a turtle plenty of swiming space. I over due for a change but this tank has lasted my turtle four yrs. Albeit, I have a male and I did not over feed so he grew at his natural rate (very slowly), so slow at times I was thinking he wasn't growing at all. If you have a get a female this won't be the case and you will need a larger tank in a year or maybe two.

For the tank, bigger is better. It might help for your new turtle to be of one of the smaller breeds if you don't want to get a really big tank.
