Isn't that a bit too much water for the little guy?

No, RES live in water. They swim and they dive. My hatchlings have always been kept in an almost full tank.

As for the Sand - I switched to sand in our hatchling's tank and he definitely seems to like it. He definitely likes to eat it and he loves to dig in it too.

I kept a close eye on him the first week I had him, to see if the depth was too much. He handled it with no issues at all.

A new born res can swim in a built in swimming pool EASY. there just like the baby sea turtles when they hatch. Right the the ocean they go out of the shell. Turtles are super good swimmers and love the more depth they have.

O.k. and here I was worried 1/2 of a 20 gallon was too much.. I am filling it up more this weekend.. Maybe that will help with the water temp getting to warm during the day too.

when i first got mine, we had them in a 20 tall, they couldn't reach the bottom for about 2 weeks. now they spend most of their time there. their current tank is a 20long but it's in the process of getting redone. they have more surface area but less depth. trying to get a 75gallon for them currently
