Habitat - Indoor :: Upgrade Ideas Needed!

Hi everyone,
I'm looking to upgrade my 40gallon tank. I need to create a 'homemade' basking area on top, and have seen some great ideas on here including tile, mesh, etc. Any suggestions as to what has worked the best, and what would be simple to create(I am no construction worker!)?
My 40 gallon is just too small for my big guy! Currently I am not in a permanent residence, so upgrading to a huge tank/setup is not an option at this time. This is my reasons for wanting to create a home made 'turtle topper'!
I have also seen turtle tub ideas, but all the retail ones seem to be pretty small.
Ideas are WELCOME!

Hi Erin, you big guy looks to be a girl

The best thing is to use something like corkbark or pvc tile and raise it high. Then put up a simple barrier, like plexiglass to prevent any escape. They do have larger turtle tubs, but they are very expensive.

Very true, I was told 'he' was a 'she' a while back, I believe he's just having an identity crisis
Maybe I should call her Mika...

Anyhow, I am now looking into large turtle tubs, six feet by three feet, turtle paradise over here!
