Habitat - Indoor :: Tesla the Turble! '^' ~Build Thread~

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

Post Posted: Mon Sep 19, 2011 7:51 pm   Tesla the Turble! '^' ~Build Thread~

I have had my little  Tesla for about two months now. I love him dearly! However, now that I am back at work, I finally have some cash laying around to upgrade his filter and build him an ATBA to maximize his water room.

I made a cruddy video showing what I have done so far. I still have quite a ways to go until Tesla is in turtle heaven. Comments/constructive criticisms appreciated. Warning: I am singing kinda obnoxiously in the beginning. Turn down the volume. XD

I think the upgrades you are planning sound perfect! I wish I would have bought the fx5 instead of the 405, so good call. Your pictures are cute :)

Aww, thanks! He's pretty social around me so he lets me snap pics all the time.
The filter I have right now is really noisy, so I'm hoping the FX5 will be a lot quieter. If anything, it will keep the tank clean. There was soooo much turtle poo trapped under the gravel when I took it out. D:

For substrate I might do sand and possibly a sucker fish or shrimp to be his janitorial/snack crew. Even though I like the way it looks, he might enjoy being able to dig around.

FX5 is definately an awesome filter, and very quiet, frankly, my air pump for the air stones is more noisy. For sand, if you have a pool supply store near you go with the pool filter sand, it is much easier to clean than play sand. Make sure you also buy filter media for the FX5, it only comes with the coarse sponges, you still have to fill the baskets with your choice of media. Check VeipaCray's media thread for suggestions. I used them with great success. http://www.redearslider.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=30145#p288938 The only thing he left out is how much media you need. (I'll get to that in a minute) If you are going with sand, do the optional config first, filter floss and carbon to clear the water , because you won't clean the sand well enough, few do.

About the quantity of media you will need. The media baskets in the FX5 are huge, get a cheap large bag of filter floss for your water polishing cycle, you won't need all of it, but it is cheap. You will need a lot of bio media, preferably the ceramic rings, get the cheapest ones, I used 5 500ml boxes, or 2.5 liters of bio-media. You will also need activated carbon, I used the pre-bagged ones from fluval 3/box, and used 2 of the bags along with one bag of purigen, you can go cheaper by buying carbon in bulk and bagging it yourself in unused nylons or the premade bags from the pet store. Also order a box of the blue floss pads from fluval for the FX5, there are 3 per box, and you will only need one of them for VeipaCray's setup, so you will have spares.

Do you have UVB and UVA? UVB provides heat while UVB emulates the sun. Also, you aren't supposed to use gravel! Little Tesla might eat it!

@PridgNYC: Thanks for all the info! I knew most of the stuff from when Veipa gave me his spiel on the first post I made, but I appreciate hearing it again.
Pool filter sand, hmm? Would this be what you mean? http://www.lesliespool.com/Home/Filters-and-Filter-Supplies/Filter-Supplies/14700.html This is a pool supply store close to where I live.

@Peva: Well, I thought the "gravel" I bought had bigger rocks in it, but later on realized that there WERE smaller rocks in the mix. Plus the fact that it trapped turtle poo under it made me finally decide it had to go, along with the risk of him eating it. :<
I did in fact take them out, like I said in the video. I'm using a Mercury Vapor Bulb, so he gets UVA and UVB in one bulb. :)

Alright. Getting my shopping list together for the FX5. Someone check me on these:
*Filter - http://www.amazon.com/Fluval-FX5-Extern ... 549&sr=1-1
*Filter floss - I have a big bag of polyfill laying around... would that work? I vaguely remember a post about it, but I wasn't sure.
*Activated carbon - http://www.amazon.com/Fluval-Carbon-100 ... 01_04_t_lh
*Bio media - http://www.ebay.com/itm/4x-1L-Odyssea-G ... _740wt_698
*Purigen - http://www.amazon.com/Seachem-166-Purig ... 266&sr=1-2
*Prime cleaner for Purigen - http://www.amazon.com/Seachem-436-Prime ... 415&sr=1-2

Sound good? I get free shipping on all my eligible Amazon purchases because I get Amazon Prime for free as a student. :> Anyone with an .edu e-mail can get it!

It takes 2 days to regenerate the Purigen. I suggest you either split that purigen in half into two media bags - use one while you clean the other and flop them each month

OR

Double up on your purigen order and still get 2 media bags. (This is what I do for my tank... use an entire 250mL bottle in the filter at once then flop it for another 250mL bag each month)

Haha, no problem. You are the filter guru, after all. :P

That shopping list sounds much better. Having carbon in bulk will be a nice thing. I'm going to order everything today since my money enters the bank in the morning.

After I get that all set up, to Home Depot or Lowes for eggcrate and ATBA fun! I was thinking of using some "astro turf" for the floor of it... Anyone know a good site to snag some from?

Some Home Depots / Lowes also carry pool filter sand depending on your area.

Sorry about the media quantities in that thread. This is a good note, I can update the thread. If you look through my build thread in my signature, I did mention the quantities I used for the FX5. If you use the expensive fluval brand bio media, each tray on the fx5 will take 2 boxes. So you'd need 5 boxes in my setup. The 4L pack she has in her shopping list should do the trick and fill up that media hungry filter.

Yes, but it's self proclaimed so it doesn't mean much. :)

They sell 3 lbs for 15 of the lignite carbon... that's even a better deal if you could swing the extra $5 in your budget. You'll be asked to select your particle size when you order... doesn't matter much for this application. Get whatever. This matters more in reactors used in reefs... not applicable here.

Eh.. Home Depot or Lowes sells "astroturf". Actually, my local store has samples for free. Grab two or three samples and viola... free turf.

Sorry for the million posts on your thread...

Don't remove that plexi or glass piece across the top. Your tank is missing the center brace, so someone put this in as a brace.

I wouldn't change out your heater for a digital one. The Eheim Jager is very accurate, reliable, and will last you for 20+ years. Every digital heater I've owned or tried has f'd up at some point.

I kept meaning to mention that was an error in speech - I meant a digital thermometer. I love the Eheim Jager. :>
