Hi. We are new to turtle ownership and have been researching like crazy. We inherited Toby last week and are so far doing pretty good, but his basking platform sucks and he does not favor it at all. So, we decided to get him a better one. After searching the local pet stores and coming up short we are going to make him one. We've purchased the PVC pipe pieces and egg carton, zip ties, etc. and created the platforms like alot of th ones I've seen on this (and other RES sites).

There is one concern. The egg carton stuff holes are so big. Toby is about 2 and we are afraid his feet are gonna get stuck in there or he will break some claws. What can we use as a to attach as a covering material? It's a great size and stability for Toby, we just need something so he doesn't get hurt. I was thinking a reptile carpet type, but they are all absorbant so that won't work.

Suggestions??

Thanks!

Toby might not bask for a few days or even a week or so. it will take Toby some time to become familiar and comfortable with any basking platform.

You could put a piece of acrylic on top (plexiglass). It's available from any home improvement store and they will even cut it for you.

I zip tied rubber shelve liner to my egg crate basking area. Works great.

The basking spot thread is a good visual guide. I plan on making my own platform or ATBA soon myself. :> viewtopic.php?f=6&t=15260
