When I look through the side of my tank, normally, i can see through the other side towards the wall, but lately the water has been cloudy and i have no idea why. I have cleaned the filter, and changed half the water, and nothing clears up. its annoying

How did you clean the filter? You may have wiped out your good bacteria and the cloudiness is the tank recycling.

Also, how much water do you change and when?

I have also been having the same problem. I got a RES about 6 weeks ago with the complete setup from a co-worker. He is 8 years old. I was told that he is very clean and that I would only need to clean the whole tank very rarely. I was told partial water exchanges would be enough but it has not been. The water turns a cloudy yellow color and is very smelly. My filter appears to be working fine and I have been using a water purification liquid when I clean or exchange. Could it be the tap water that I use? I have had to clean the entire tank once a week and 2-3 partial exchanges. It is too much work to clean the whole thing every week. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this problem?

Can you describe your setup? Water temps, gallons, filter type, media, etc.

Maybe all of you guys aren't letting your aquariums cycle and make that good bacteria grow in your filters and throughout the tank. Just leave your tanks alone do small water changes a few times a week.

Actually if your tank is cycling, you shouldn't be doing any water changes.

Will the water normally get dirty looking before it starts to clear up?

It depends on what's going on. Are you doing complete water changes? Is there bio media?

i have to end up doing a complete water change because of the dirtiness. my filter has a sponge, carbon, and some other like ammonia remover thing.

What filter do you have? Do you have any room to add any bio media?
