Habitat - Indoor :: Lighting help

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

Post Posted: Tue Dec 21, 2010 4:26 pm   Lighting help

Hi there,

I am new to this forum and to having a turtle! I recently became an owner of one who I think is aprox 8months - 1 yr old. I wasn't given much info on how to look after it (might be a him not sure lol) but since reading this site and forum I now have an idea of what im letting myself in for :D

My question is - I have a halogen light that my Dad doesn't use for his BiOrb fish tank (he uses an LED one) and I was wondering if it would be ok to adapt and use with my turtle?

I live in Cyprus so in the summer my turtle will get a nice amount of sun as I will take him outside as often as I can, its this time of year I worry about. Any advice would be great.

You can use the halogen bulb as a source for heat and UVA. You will still need a second UVB bulb for this time of year. Cheers!

Hi, thanks for the quick reply. At least I can get him set up with some extra heat to start with.
Thanks again!

What kind of halogen light is it? Just be aware that some halogen lights require a filter because of unwanted UV rays.

Me again, what bulb could I get that will cover UVA & UVB? Its not always easy to get hold things over here so If I have an idea what I am looking for then I can ask around and maybe get one ordered.

Thanks in advance....and Merry Christmas!

The typical source people use for UVA/UVB is a compact fluorescent bulb, specifically the Reptiglo 5.0 or Reptisun 5.0. There are other types of sources, like natural sunlight, self-ballasted mercury vapor bulbs and fluorescent tubes. Any product needs to specifically say it outputs UVB.

He eats well and has taken a liking to grapes. Hopefully he shall be in his new home very soon :-)

Thank you for all your help, im completely new at all this and want to do this right.
