I just ordered the Fluval 4 plus off amazon but they sent a Fluval U4 instead. Is the U4 better or should I return it for the 4 plus? Thanks.

I've only used the Fluval 4, which is a dependable but basic filter. It's only real good for mechanical filtration while the U4 offers more options. There is a little back and forth on which is better here: http://www.bristlenoseworld.com/tank-wa ... 4-t669.htm

I would look at either as a temporary filter...

Probably due to size. Using the 5x rule of filter flow to tank size, the U4 should hold it's own up to a 50G tank. A 50G tank is small for an adult RES or any turtle more than 5". For a tank larger than 50G you'd either have to add a second U4 or replace it with a larger filter.
