Hi everybody,
I just inherited a red eared slider from a friend of mine, and I'm having some trouble with keeping the water clean. I'm on my third filter now (a reptofilter). The filters always start off fine, and the water seems clear, but after a day or two the water gets murky and smelly. The reptofilter is a waterfall type thing, so I held a cup under the water to check what was coming out and it's definitely spitting out murkiness. Any ideas about what the problem could be? With the repto filter the murkiness literally began happening the day I bought it.

Maybe because you only tried small and useless filters, such as reptofilter. Try a canister and you should be fine. How big is the tank and how big is the res?

Try a filter that is rated for three times the size of your tank. I have a bottle of turtle clean that helps get rid of turtle waste.

my tank is pretty small i think it's only 10 gallons and the filter is for a 20g tank. so do i need a 30g filter? the 20g already takes up mad space

How big is your turtle? The smaller the tank is the quicker it is to get dirty if it's a bigger turtle. Maybe it's time for an upgrade tank?

Yeah I too think it's a small filter/small tank combo which is causing the issue. If you inherited the turtle then I guess it's not a hatchling? If the turt is 4" in a 10g tank with a 20g rated internal filter then no way that the water can stay clean for more than a couple of days.

Honestly, the fact that you're finding the 20gal tank large is not good. You're going to need a 75 or 125 gallon tank for your turtle when it is an adult, depending on sex.

As others already said, you have a useless filter. I have one too laying around somewhere. It's usually the first one you buy when you know squadoosh about turtles along with a 10 gallon tank.
I don't blame you for taking the turtle, I blame the person that gave you the turtle without telling you anything about it's care. That's just irresponsible!

Well, maybe the former owner knew even less about turtles than him.
Anyway small internal filters are not completely useless.. They're ok for little shrimp or snail tanks.. You never know when they may come in handy.
