I picked this up tonight for $50. It's 100~ gallons. Measurements read closer to 95 I think, but it's suppose to be 100. The reason I'm looking for some advice is because it seems that this tank is pretty old, and a little beaten. I was told that there was a turtle in this tank recently, and it had been emptied because the people I bought it from were moving out of town. The tank shows signs of water having been in it, and probably a turtle at that, but it does look as if it has a few cracks in it. But for $50 I could hardly pass it up. I figure as long as it doesn't shatter on me, if it doesn't hold water I can probably get my money back for it from someone looking to house a large reptile.

The tank is missing some of its plastic/metal trim parts. The ones that seem more important would be the bottom pieces. I realize that the trim is more for looks than anything else really because it isn't a support piece, but I do think it helps to protect the glass. My case for this is this seems to be the place where the cracks are found. Two of the corners seem to be cracked, neither all the way through however, just on the outside.

The longer I sit and stare at the thing, and think about it the more nervous I get to even put anything in it. I'll try and get some pictures of the cracks in the morning when the sun is out because the light in the room is currently broken. I just want to see if anyone has any suggestions on whether I should even bother, or just try and get my money back out of it.

The trim pieces are a very important part to the structure of the tank. The top and bottom trim pieces help keep the glass from bowing out and breaking. You need those parts. There is also a difference between a reptile tank and a fish tank. The reptile tanks aren't meant to hold that much water and the glass usually isn't that thick.

The tank is an aquarium, its really thick. I know that there is a difference, but when an aquarium is damaged enough where it doesn't hold water it can then also be called a reptile tank =D

This crack looks worse in image form... it looks as if the previous owner added some extra sealant to the inside of the tank on this corner, but the crack definitely doesn't go all the way through. I think it was precautionary.

This is the on that bothers me quite a bit. It's not all the way through, but it does look deep.

As for the trim pieces, prior to posting I did quite a bit of research. Yeah, on newer tanks they definitely help to support the glass from bowing out. They're made with a bit thinner glass though as well. The older tanks didn't have the cross bar in the center, and still held fine. This tank looks pretty old, and I don't believe it ever actually came with the bottom trim. You can see where the two side pieces were there on top at one point because the adhesive is still on the glass, but the bottom is clean other than the cracks it has gotten from people sliding it around. That to me is the main purpose for the bottom trim pieces, to protect the glass from fracturing when the tank is slid in and out of place.

Not to be negative, but picture someone pouring a gallon of water on your floor. Now picture 99 more people doing it too. If you're not sure it holds water, I would test it outside first and let it sit for a few days. Cracked glass is just a bad idea. D:

Oh no, I completely agree. The plan currently is to clean it out because it's filthy right now. After that I want to look around the tank again and attemp to see if there are any other cracks and also try to seep up any I find. From there it is being moved to my porch, where I plan to fill it up slowly. Thinking ten gallons at a time, give it an hour or so in between and thorough inspections before adding more. I realize that this might not really show anything, but in the off chance that it will show me that it can't Hold water prior to shattering, I want to do it that way so I may be able to salvage it for something else. Once it's full i want to leave it out there for at least a week looking it over everyday and adding water to keep it full. If it still looks the same after that period of time I will probably move it in.

I am still really nervous about it so any other precautions you would suggest are welcome. I realize that many of you will probably tell me it isn't worth trying but I feel like I need to a least try it after spending the money.

Damaged glass might not offer any clues before it ruptures. I would not feel comfortable filling that tank for aquatic turtles.

If I were you, I would try to get my money back and spend money on a new tank. You might have to spend too much trying to fix it up and seal everything up. In my opinion I think it would just be easier to get a brand new one. And the new one will guarantee last you a long time if you get a big enough one. It sucks though, I knew you really want to just fix it up.

Yeah, you guys are probably right... I doubt I can get my money back from the people I got it from since they moved away, but I can attempt to sell it to someone else that doesn't plan to use it for water... That's probably the best option.

I doubt I have the money to buy a completely new tank and stand but I may be able to find a newish/newer one on craigslist. At least one without cracks. I will have to be sure to look the tanks over much better next time. My 55 I bought used and I barely looked it over before I bought it but it turned out well. This one though is another story.

It's still a large tank, you should be able to get your money back from reselling it.

What a shame, it's a magnificent tank. My old 85gal custom sized tank ( the one that exploded in the fire) had similar cracks but it never leaked a drop. I had the guy I bought it from show it to me filled up to the top before I'd buy it.
On a sidenote, is that a 26" or a 32" tv on the left?
Cheers.

Yeah, I really do wish I would have asked them to fill it up, but even doing that wouldn't have made me feel any easier about because it could just slowly get worse. I'll get my money out of it, if not more even.

That is actually one of my two 22" wide screen monitors. That one is a samsung HDTV monitor, so yeah, it is actually my tv as well =D
