I have a Rena Filstar XP4 filter for my 120 gallon tank. It came with some media but there is room to add more. Any suggestions on what is the best types of media to add? The filter seems to be working great, except the water still has a little smell to it.

Thanks!

What kind do you have in there? I'd try to add extra bio and mechanical media. What kind of smell do you get?

Some XP4's came with biomedia as a promotion, some didn't. If yours didn't, you need to buy some---(ceramic rings or stars, or whatever).

also check the type of water you have. if its high in chlorine, ammonia, hard/soft water, etc. using zeolite or carbon can help with those and also help with the smell. rings and stars are a must, along with the black sponges or floss.
