Habitat - Indoor :: measuring turtle for tank size

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

I saw that the rule of thumb is for every inch of the turtle, the size of the tank should accommodate that (eg. 4 inches = 40 gallon tank).

My question is, how do you measure the turtle? eg. end to end of the shell from tail to head? or across??

Also, any recommendations on sites where you've seen tanks are reasonable in price would be appreciated! Thank you.

Hope this helps...

There's currently a $1 per gallon promotion at Petco (ends the 17th, tank limit is 55 gallons). For other tanks, craigslist seems like the best way to go.

Thank you so much for the reply! My dilema is I don't know if the 55 gal tank is sufficiently big or not. The turtle has grown 2-3 inches since March...I don't know how fast he/she will grow until adult size, so am not sure if I should go for a bigger tank or not. That said, money is an issue, of course...lol...

Any suggestions???

Do you know if you have a male or female? I think you can probably get away with having a male in a 55 gallon with a basking area above the tank (ATBA).

If you can put one in your house a stock tank can be used. They are very cheap
