when designing my tank i have created a basking area that is not completely out of the water. i noticed that my slider will sometimes rest at the bottom of the tank for long periods of time, can he sleep underwater and still breathe? do i need to provide a place in the tank where he can sleep completely out of water?

They are supposed to sleep underwater. No worries.

They can and do sleep underwater, I had a painted turtle who slept underwater and a red bellied slider who slept above water.

However, you do need an area where the turtle can come completely out of water. They need this to dry off, otherwise they are more prone to fungal issues because it stays wet all the time. If you see them in the wild, they bask out of water.

Them sleeping in the water is normal my RES does it and i see him sometimes wake up and come up for air for a bit and go back down.
You can either buy or make something that let's them be fully submerged under the water but be able to poke their head out of the water to breathe i have seen these bridge type things at PetCo that allows them to do so.
