Habitat - Indoor :: New tank for Steve

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

I came across a deal I could not pass up at a local pet store. 77 gallon tank, plus a fluval 405 and a submersible heater for $350. I got it all set up, the tank is about 3/4 of the way full, got a few river rocks in the bottom holding down my plastic plants, and the water is at a comfortable 78 degrees. Steve seems to love it so far, but unfortunately I am broke for the moment. All that he has to bask on is his small floating turtle dock from his 10 gallon tank that he was in previously.

I want to make my own basking platform above the water using egg crate, and I was hoping some people might have suggestions as to how to attach it. I was thinking I could use the floating dock as a ramp onto the egg crate, and cover the egg crate with reptile carpet and put fake plants on it so he has a bit of basking privacy. I looked at some other people's pictures and got some ideas, but how do I attach it to the tank? Would suction cups work?

I'll post some pictures of what I have once I get the chance.

That sounds like a great deal! Can't wait for pics!

On the egg crate dock - I used egg crate for the ramp and attached it with zip ties. I've seen others drill holes in a floating dock at one end and use zip ties to attach it that way.

I would never buy a tank in a pet store. After getting such good deals on craigslist. it just seems like a huge waist of money to pay so much at a pet store when you can buy a 100 gal with prob everything for 150$ or less on craiglist.

Sin - it depends on the area you're in. Where I am, if a tank bigger than 50g comes up, they're asking $500-$1000 for it. It's just totally ridiculous.

All the same, $350 for a new tank with filter and heater is a great deal, at least up here in the Frozen North ;)

Here there are only like 4 ads posted in the entire pets section of craigslist. It's not a useful site everywhere. The cheapest used tank I could find was $300 for a 55gal that didn't come with anything. There's no way I would've gone to a pet store to buy it if I hadn't already looked for something cheaper.

Vancouver Island. It's a bit hard to get things here since it is an island. Plus there's lots of old people everywhere.
