Habitat - Indoor :: Interesting idea for a refugium of sorts.

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

I have been brainstorming a way to keep plants alive without letting the turtle reach them and one thing i wanted to do if my tank ever needs replacing is to have the supplier drill 3 holes in the side of the tank and attach a smaller tank to it.

No pumps between them, just 3 holes too small for the turtle with inch long clear tubes connecting them. So the fish could go back and forth and he water coud mix well.

Here are some links that helped me brainstorm the idea

This was the part that gave me the idea to let the fish swim between.

This is similar to the placement i had in mind. I am thinking a tank no longer then 1 foot wide and 2 front to back. and 1 top to bottom.

Anyone have any experience with a setup like this? Any input on the 3 connecting holes?

Again, this will wait till we have to wait till its time to replace our 120g tank. Im told its risky to drill the holes and the only gerunteed way to do it without loosing a tank is to have the supplier do it.

I would rather setup some sort of divider, maybe made of acrylic.

Yeah it's largely for appearance issues. this thing is in our LR and I would prefer to keep the tank looking uncluttered. A refugium like that would have 2 advantages, i could get rid of the damn duckweed (only plant that can survive our turtle), and i wouldnt need a mess of hoses connecting the 2.

I would posittion the filter in the main tank so it would guide a current towards 1 of the holes to prevent the need for a seperate pump.
