Habitat - Indoor :: Herman's new tank!

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

Post Posted: Sun Feb 28, 2010 5:13 pm   Herman's new tank!

So, as promised in my other thread, here are crappy iPhone pictures of Herman's new house:

He looks so tiny in his new mansion. Next on my to do list: ATBA, bigger water heaters, and rigging a MVB over his ATBA.

ya that is if your going by the 10 gal per inch rule wich like nobody really does y have such i nice tank without more turtles its completely his decision and i think from exprience that it would be fine if he gets a male res or other species

Yeah, it's still a work in progress. First thing is ATBA w/ a Mega-Ray bulb, then I'm probably going to put tile down in the bottom of it for prettyness I been thinking about getting some of that Malasian drift wood off of Ebay, but I'm not sure how big I want it to be.

In other news, I do want another turtle, but I'd prefer to get a 2nd tank outright to avoid aggression issues before they start. I'm thinking I want to get a Western Painted, as said in another thread. If I get one of them, 75 gal should be plenty, and my "tank wall" is 11' long, so 6 ft + 4 ft should be just right.

In other OTHER news, we just put in his filter (which I got used off of E-bay) and thank goodness it worked. The outlet pipe is kinda a flat jet thing, so it's really agitating the surface and creating current, which is good. Herman really seems to like it too, he's been spending most of his time on that corner of the tank, getting tossed around by the current. =D

I got a used Rena Filstar XP3 for around $70 IIRC. Might've been like $77. I think that's a pretty good deal for a $150-200 new filter.

On the downside, it doesn't seem to include ALL of the original parts. Seems the dude bought some kinda 1-peice intake tube instead of the normal assembly of "extendable" tubing peices. Made getting the pump primed a bit harder than it had to be, but not terrible given my father's ability to jury-rig things.

Right now, working on getting his little chicken wire screen secured so that he can't get out, since we raised the water level and moved the basking dock back some so it wasn't getting sprayed by the filter output.

Oh, and I forgot to state it earlier, but the reason I think I need a 2nd tank for a 2nd turtle is that Herman bites at his own reflection in the glass, I doubt he/she would be very receptive to another turtle if he's that aggressive at his own reflection :P
