13 years and my turtle dives right away whenever someone walks into the room, hence the name sliders

Many species of turtle were around during the time of the dinosaurs (for example, the alligator snapper in it's current form was around during the jurassic era) and to survive for millions of years they have evolved to their environment. Without much offensive capability, they needed to get into the water where bigger animals and birds couldn't get them. Those traits are still strong in our pet turtles today and at the slightest hint of possible danger, they indeed "slide" to safety.

I find that reptomin pellets and delicious tuna will bring them back pretty quick  Instincts or not, they sure are suckers for a treat!

Mine's an oddball, sometimes he won't get off his rock even if you poke him. I think it's cause he spent a couple months in a Deathbowl sitting less than a foot away from my elbow. Now he isn't scared of anything! Even when our dogs run around his tank barking for no reason he just calmly sits on his rock, chillin. I don't think he'd live in the wild, all things considered. Seems to have no flee instinct for whatever reason. The only time he gets off his rock when you're close to him is if we pick up his food container, or bring him some lettuce. Then he dives in and does the usual beg routine. But you can get right up close and stare at him and he just kinda eyeballs you like "What, you wanna go!?"
