Habitat - Indoor :: Improvment of Beneficial Bacteria.

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

I've been researching fish care in hopes of finding good filtration techniques. A few vets and experienced care-takers are stressing the need for good amounts of dissolved oxygen in the water. In the past, I generally assumed the oxygen in the water was strictly for fish that were living in the water. I'm finding it useful to know that the bacteria that live in established filters and breakdown solid waste also live off of oxygen in the water. Better aeration of aquarium water will also improve the growth of aquatic plants. This is why aeration of the water is so important.

With better water aeration, using things such as an airstone, filtration is greatly improved.

Thought I'd pass that on to those trying to improve their biological filtration and increase the time between filter cleanings.

Good points. I'm not looking for bio media, but methods of aeration also help break the water surface, keeping away some insects and preventing an oil buildup.

One tradeoff of better aeration is that it makes it easier for algae to thrive.
Finding the right balance is tricky.

If you have any filter that breaks the surface of the water it puts in plenty of dissolved oxygen in the water. Thats why i make sure filters always have the water fall effect going somehow. So the new fluval FX5 im getting im gonna make sure that hose is not directly in the water like i see everyone have it.
