Post Posted: Tue Aug 11, 2009 8:41 am   I put 5 RES in 45 Liters Tank..is that wrong ????

well..after reading alot in this site i found that 10 gallons for each 1 inch..

ops... i have 5 RES and i put them in 45 liters tank each one of them about 4 inches

lol ... i know maybe i did something so wrong but it's hard to increase the size of my tank ...

i guess i can buy a new one and it could contain 180 litres not more...

so is it possible to do that ? i can't put in my room more than 180 litres of tank size and i can't move them to another location in my home, mom hates them alot lol

any help!!!! ???????????

I have 3 turtles, and they are still small now, all less than 3 inches, i plan to get a big plastic tank, and put it out side, that way my turtles can get sunlight, which is better than any UVB light, and it's much cheaper... so since ur mum hate them, put them outside, good for u, and for ur mum too... XD

I have two turtles in a 40 gallon tank, so the 48 gallons (180L) isn't going to come close. Mine is too small, but i plan on getting a 90 gallon, which would still be too small for you. 5 turtles will make the tank so dirty and make equal basking very difficult.

You would be better off with 2 enclosures and to make it affordable, use large rubbermaid containers. If this isn't an option, you need some sort of outdoor pond, which must have basking areas and be heated. Even then, I wouldn't recommend leaving them out for the winter.

So yes, 5 turtles in a 10 gallon tank is wrong.

Stock tanks are also a good investment. You can get big ones for pretty cheap at farm and tractor stores.

I keep just too turtles in a 55 gallon (which I happened to just buy today). They love the extra room a lot.

I have 5 RES in a 400 gallon pool and it's to small in my opinion. They are big turtles and really like to swim.

Wicca- 400 gallons might not be to small for them like you think. I judge the size of the tank necessary by their behavior, not the 10 gallon rule. The reason being, it seems to me that when multiple RES behave cramped, they bump into each other or their tank objects a lot, can't get privacy, flutter over tank objects excessively, nip at each other or have huge fights, and eventually act very stressed out.

I think the 10 gallon rule was invented because there is no other concrete answer to the question, "How big should the tank be?" Plus, most tanks are sold at sizes of even numbers, so instead of getting 397 gallons, you have 400 gallons. I'm sure there's some kind of math involved in the way they size tanks.

My turtles lived in a 10 gallon tank for a whole year, and only started acting cramped a month ago. I bought them a 55 gallon yesterday.

I wouldn't really say 400 gallons is too small for 5 RES, but it also depends on what you consider too small. To live healthily, 400 gallons should suffice as long as you put plants and hiding places for the turtles. Although, to mimic the most natural of habitats I say "the bigger, the better."

That really is way too small for those turtles. That tank is actually too small for just one of those turtles. Take out the gravel, please.

I'm, kind of speechless right now after seeing those photos. I'll try not to be rude.

That habitat you have is absolutely too small for that many turtles, even one. Please upgrade your tank sufficiently, or find a good home for some of them. The gravel is a no-no as well, as if they do on chance eat some, they can get impacted and die.

Please do the right thing.

Way too small for them bud, it needs to be a wide tank, you have a high tank, not enough space for them to swim. This would do you better and it's still wouldn't be enough. http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.j ... Id=3804451
Let's say you have 5, 5 inch turtles. That's 25 inch total, which means you'll need a 250 tank minimum, along with large basking area and such.
1 Mississippi Map Turtle 3.25'' (Landslide)
1 Ouachita Map Turtle 4.0'' (Hurricane)
The rest of the turtles have been adopted to good homes. :)

Yea i understand the economy is bad but have you ever look"d into stock tanks?? I saw a 50 gallon at home depot the other day for 20$ That means you could prob find a 100gal for about 40$. It would def be improvement of what you have them in right now.
