Habitat - Indoor :: New to tank and NO IDEA (under construction)

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

Post Posted: Wed Jul 29, 2009 8:01 am   New to tank and NO IDEA (under construction)

Hi everyone~! I just want to show some initial part of setup my turtle's tank. Right now I'm in middle of nowhere

Here the story behind where I get this secondhand tank with powerhead filter for free  (its just temporary until I save more money to get canister filter)

90 gallon tank 4ft x 2ft x 1.8ft with custom made ATBA

After all the cleaning process and seat the water for a 2 days.. yesterday I just put my turtle in the tank to introduce their new home. (once everything settle, I will fixed the glass stripes for more security)

First thing I do is put the resting ramp for them

And thats all.... hihi.. I'm LOST.

The ATBA is ready but I dunno how to make the stairs for them to climb up to the basking area.

Don't worry. I just put them for temporary for them get used with the large tank. (24hours only and after that move them back in their old tank) Once everything done, I will move the light stand which hold the UVB n UVA lights together. Also need more times to get canister filter.

Any idea from you guys?

I'm making a similar box like structure.

I'm thinking of screwing a piece of curved cork bark at the bottom of the entrance as a ramp. I think aside from it being easy for me to work with, it'd also be aesthetically pleasing. (My ATBA is gonna be made from wood, only submerged thing will be the cork bark).

You could also attach a regular turtle ramp to the ATBA, or maybe use another piece of egg crate.

I'm thinking to use a regular turtle ramp.. but I was not sure whether that thing can hold it there.. if not it will bowing up and down and my turtle for sure couldn't climb on it..

~~Still blurr and thinking and thinking...

How to decorate the basking area eh?

Wow! Looks great! I didn't know Malaysian boxies could be (nearly) aquatic!
I think they'll be very happy there!
For decorating the basking area, you could put a background on two or three of the sides, it would give the turts some privacy basking too. I've seen some people put fake plants up there too, but you'd need to silicon them down so they didn't get dragged into the water.

Owh yeah.. Thanks BullDog :D

Malayan Boxie supposedly lived 70% on land 30% in water, but previous owner who give me this turtle never let this turtle basking, she lived in 100gallon tank with large fishes with greeny smelly aquarium. Poor little baby.
Thats why in the pictures, my boxie don't go swim like my RES, she just stay put on the resting ramp.

Thanks for d idea, I'm thinking to put a background for the tank but wasn't thinking to put a background for the basking area :P Hmm yeah, instead letting the see-trough basking wall

Hehe.. in previous basking area, all my turtles loves to dragged all the decorative things I put and arranged very well into a water~!.. so notty girls!

If you put some river rocks, and some fake plants, like a vine around the edges, that will make the ATBA look more natural, and very pretty. You could also put down turtle turf, since it gives them more traction and it's very comfortable for them to walk and sit/lay on. A background that matches or just goes with the same colors as the background on the tank, would be very lovely. Maybe a river rock background for the tank, and a forest/tree background for the ATBA.

What I'm planning on doing, to protect my ATBA from water damage, is paint it. After all, I do have a degree in studio art, might as well put it to use! I'll probably paint turtles and cute pictures and things, maybe something "toki doki" style for some flare. Maybe for you, if you don't necessarily wanna go all out like that, is you could buy those tank magnet characters, where each half of the animal goes on either side of the wall and they stay in place. Like, these things: http://www.petdiscounters.com/Dolphin-T ... p7059.html

That site has sea turtle magnets, but I can't find them...

@Alex - Oh thank you for such great idea. I already noted it down in my list. I think to put a background is very good idea.. I have 2 choices, either for the tank background I want to have like root of forest tree or giant tree or the river rocks design and for the ATBA background a forest/tree design :D

Anyway Alex, so far in my state, I never seen those magnet animal stuff.. maybe I can find another thing but I dunno.. hehe.. I can't wait to see yours painting when your ATBA is ready~!

@Trebzet - Thank you thank you.. she is Malayan Box turtle.. :D and it is common boxie in Asian country like us.. I wasn't sure why your mother said turtle is bad when have business, because all my chinese friends told me dat turtle gives luck and got 'ONG".. I'm so happy when heard of it.

@BlackForces Get You - Why you said, "I knew it".. have you ever come across to have this boxie??

azfar- i havn't ran into many boxies. mainly red ear sliders. i wish i was in the wild studying them all but new york city is just too bright and overcrowded so theres not really much to see besides buildings and lights. i wish i was out there looking at animals. but i only get to do that on vacations. which will happen next year

@Trebzet - You want to capture the wild one? Is it ok to do dat? Actually the powerhead and media box filter I get it for free once I purchased the tank. So I will use it for temporary until my money is enough to get canister filter

@BlackForces - Owh I see... so do you love boxie? do you want mine? hehe.. actually my boxie quite aggressive than my RES.. she sometimes loves to bite my RES neck .. I hate dat.. so at one time, I feel that I don't want this boxie anymore but.. when people ask about me how much the boxie.. I felt sorry for her and decided not to give her away to anybody.. hihi.. she just a cute boxie.
