Any hardware store should have river rocks.

You can get decorative rocks at most pet stores. I bought a few bags of decorative rocks and mixed them with rocks that I found outside and steralized by boiling them.
Toby - RES - adopted in December 2007 - 120g tank - Fluval FX5

Max - Pit Bull/Irish Setter/Dalmatian mix - adopted in March 2009
Lola - Pit Bull mix - adopted in June 2009

I've always found it funny to purchase river rocks. When I was a kid, I collected stones from all over (most of which ended up in the rock gardens), so when I switched to river rocks in the tank, I just picked my favourites out the the garden, boiled them, and got to enjoy my rock collection again! Most rocks look a lot cooler under water anyhow.

But I've also seen bags of river rocks at the dollar store too.

River rocks are the term we use. I found "garden rocks" at Wal-Mart. When you do get your rocks, don't forget to sterilize them. You can boil them or place them in some bleach water for several hours. Mine are about, 1 inch to about 1 1/2 inch in size.

I just got a red eared slider which is about 3inches in length, but he keeps trying to eat the small rocks I have in my tank. He spits them back out, but is this normal? Or do I have to take the small rocks out?

Take the small rocks out! There's a good chance he has swallowed some of them already if you've seen him putting them in his mouth. If a rock gets stuck in his digestive track, he can become impacted and die.

Make sure any rocks you put in the tank are larger than his head (and replace smaller rocks as he grows). Also, once you take the small rocks out, make sure you check everyday (for a month or so!) and scoop out any small rocks he's pooped out.

30 bucks for rocks? Holy god...

Lol, I paid like, five bucks for their big, pink, aquarium rock. It's the only pink thing Typhoon likes. (Maybe because it's a light, pale pink. Darker pinks scare the crap out of her). Their mancala stones I spent two dollars on, their old gravel that I don't use anymore cost me six bucks, and I think their river rocks were another five bucks, maybe a little less. That's about twenty bucks... Yish...

In the future, I'll just get rocks from outside and disinfect them.

IMO the purpose of having turtle tanks besides the fact of holding turtles, they have to be appealing to the eye.I won't compromise to buy cheap stuff (that i don't like) if it doesn't look good in my tank.I probably could have searched and found stuff that i liked in nature, but i wanted my tank up and running ASAP :)
That's why i will NEVER have a bear-bottom tank in my house no matter how easy it is to clean.
