Habitat - Indoor :: New Tank For My Two Little Guys And Possibly A New Friend

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

Post Posted: Sun Mar 08, 2009 6:33 am   New Tank For My Two Little Guys And Possibly A New Friend

I am currently looking to upgrade my tank from a 10 gallon feeder to a 55 gallon setup. Since I am a student, funds are tight, i am looking on craigslist and what not. My first question is, i have found a tank with a stand that i can get for 65 dollars. It is good condition from what i can tell from the pictures...is this a good deal? Secondly, the man said he can no longer take care of his 5 year old RES and asked if i could take her. currently i have two of my own who are both less than a year, sex undetermined. I have no problem taking this turtle as i do not want to see anything bad happen to her, im just concerned about them interacting with each other or possibly fighting. One of my turtles, george seems completely peaceful, while fran, the larger turtle has snapped once or twice at my finger when it was close to her mouth. (not sure if that is relevant). Lastly, is a 55 gallon tank large enough for three turtles to live comfortably in. Thus far, i have been doing everything by the book and have managed to successfully raise two baby turtles from chinatown. Which i was told had a very low survival rate.

Thanks in advance!!!

65 for a tank and stand is a great price.
and a 55 gallon is hardly big enough for one turtle when it gets bigger.

i know you want to take in the third turtle
but you will eventually have your hands full with just two turtles.

turtles are solitary animals and prefer to live alone
and have been known to get aggressive to tank mates.

thats a good deal you should jump on.

do not take in the third turtle though. a 55 gallon wont be near big enough for 2 full grown turtles let alone 3. and there is a good chance that they would start to fight if you decide to take the third turtle

A 55 gallon isn't even big enough for the 5 year old RES. Turtles needs 10 gallons of water for each inch of their shell, and each additional turtle needs 5 gallons of water for each inch of shell. A 55 gallon is probably barely big enough for your 2 little turtles, but would be much better than a 10 gallon.

Turtles are expensive :)

thanks for the replies guys... although i have been doing everything by the book so far, i simply cannot afford to get the right amount of gallon's for the two turtles that i have right now. i have heard mixed things about turtles being alone or with other turtles and quite frankly, i have never seen them fight or have any issues in the tank with each other. this might be due to the fact they've been together since they were around one month old. this is way im wondering if there would be aggression shown towards the new unknown turtle... regardless it sounds like 3 turtles would be way too much for me right now in terms of tank size, and other equipment.

if you cant afford to get the right amount of space for 2 turtles, what sense is there to add a 3rd one

its considered lucky to have 2 get along with no fighting, adding a 3rd stranger isnt improving the odds

all signs point to no to another turtle
