Are you talking about the crud that settles on top of the sand or the sand layer itself?
If its the crud then a python or vacuum helps a lot. I think I have also mentioned that I got the magnum for water polish. When I have it running I literally have a big wooden spoon that I use to dust up a current at the bottom of the tank. This pushes the wastes on top of the sand to the intake of the filter. It is not perfect but it helps.
Spotsmama was talking about a powered vacuum in another post. That might be an idea as well. Been thinking of just hooking up a vacuum tube to the magnum itself. That would be easier than my spoon ritual!

Yeah I do what Melissa does. You can also run a net around to stir up the surface of the sand and send debris flying. Then you can let your filter get it, or you can net it out.

Did you say in another post you had the Eheim vac? Does that not work on the sand? It looks handy - like I need another toy!
