I just let mine float (it's an oxygenator, so it will add oxygen to the water). Plants from the "wort," family (fanwort, hornwort) have never been my turtles favorites. I have one bunch that spend last summer outside, came in with the turtle and is still fine in the indoor tank (although he will on occasion nip off pieces of it).
I think it depends on the turtle to some extent as well---hortwort in two other tanks didn't make it through the winter, although it did last longer than some of the other plants, like anachris and water hyacinth. Your turtle may like to eat it it or your turtle may not. He may also just rip it up.
