Habitat - Indoor :: Goldfish cleaning my tank??????

Every few months I give my RES a goldfish treat because the local pet store is out of rosies. (I know they are fatty, but 2 or 3 times a year can't hurt.....I eat fried chiken and fries more than that )

The other day I threw 4 goldfish in the tank. 2 of them were the standard color and 2 had a brownish gold color to them. My turtles immediately went into a frenzy and caught one of the gold ones each. However, they had a much more difficult time seeing and catching the brownish ones. In fact, it has been almost a week now. The goldfish are still alive and the turtles aren't even bothering with them unless one swims right in front of it. Then it makes a small effort to catch it and gives up again.

The goldfish have had a pleasant side effect on my tank.

They seem to be bottom feeders and are eating some of the extra food and waste that accumulates at the bottom of my tank. My tank is cleaner and I haven't had to net out the excess nearly as often.

I hope these guys last.

Feeder fish are lovely at picking up little bits of debris. That's why I'm always so sad when Leo eats all of hers within minutes

I will get 20 feeders for 2 of my turtles at a time. They eat most within a week. Well, they refuse to eat some and I can never figure out why and I never feed the fish. They live off of the debris in the tank. I usually put them in a local pond becuase they grow to a size I never see feeders get before! They're huge and take up too much room. Fish love my turtle tank. Thought I'd share a story that keeps happeneing to me!

AC-lover - They will get around to the brownish ones sooner or later. Facts of life, "turtles eat fish"!!

Yeah, I bought three Rosie Reds on day. Before the end of the night, two of the three were eaten. I thought maybe my turtle was pacing himself. It took him three weeks before eating the other one, unprovoked. The two survivors might just be a little faster than your turtles at the moment, but they'll get faster! And yes, they make for lovely cleanup maids.

Weird, my fish seem to make more of a mess than they clean up. They do eat stuff on the bottom though.
