Habitat - Indoor :: A Toy for Fred

Every summer, we visit a neat old guy who makes hand made marbles and paperweights. He always is giving me bits and bobs of end cuts of glass. Most of the time there are strings of colored glass in the middle of the clear crystal glass. Yesterday, I found one about the size and shape of a large egg, washed it and put it in Fred's cage. It has four spaghetti size threads of blue glass within the crystal. Fred has spent tons of time turning the egg over to get to the threads...because they look like they are under the egg no matter which side is up. He isn't chomping at it, just nosing it over and peering at it intently...then he noses and peers again. It has been so much fun to watch!

That's so funny! I love how they react to new things in thier enviroment. I never had a background on my tank, and when i put one up Turtley was fascinated by it. He spent about an hour swimming with his nose against the glass, looking at all the different parts of it, and fluttering at parts he found especially interesting.

How cool that Fred likes it, my turtles have lost interest in their tank "toys, " after we move in May I'll have to change them up so they're more interested again.

Just make sure that the glass cannot chip or otherwise break, you don't want him eating it or getting shards in his claws...

I think it will be okay, it is completely smooth, and the glass is borosilicate, which is a very hard glass. But I will check it regularly just to be safe.
